Morning team. Today's mushroom is the Velvet Shank, or Velvet Foot, Flammulina velutipes. Carlos found this mushroom fruiting on a Japanese maple by the ramble shed. Flammulina typically fruits in the late fall and can be found growing throughout the winter and into the early spring. It is found across North America, Europe, and Asia. It's saprobic and grows out of dead wood. This mushroom is cultivated in Japan and is know as Enoki or Enokitake. When cultivated they're grown without light and in a carbon dioxide rich environment. The cultivated Flammulina appears quite different than when it grows in the wild and I've included a picture so you can see for yourself. There were slugs chowing down on these mushrooms too which was quite neat.
Have a pleasant Monday,
Aubrey
